Commotio Retinae

Commotio retinae is commonly due to blunt injuries to the globe.

In this patient with a history of blunt trauma there is superficial (and some deeper) hemorrhage with adjacent RPE pigmentary changes. While some of these pigmented areas may represent small choroidal ruptures (linearly oriented), the majority of the changes (arrow) represent resolving commotio. As the area of commotio heals, secondary pigmentary changes are commonly observed.
