This number represents the total area of the disc. This is used to understand the implication of the cup-to-disc (C/D) ratio. Recall that large discs will naturally have large cups. Small discs should have small cups. It is the neuroretinal rim (NRR) tissue that should remain comparable to age-matched controls. As a reminder, the NRR refers to the neural tissue within the optic disc. It is formed by the conglomeration of axons travelling from the ganglion cells of the retina.
