Is the retinal thickening due to the epiretinal membrane?

In this OCT image you will note an epiretinal membrane (arrows). There is also intraretinal fluid best described as diffuse outer retinal thickening (circle). There is some overlying inner retinal opacification (stars). In combination this set of features is consistent with macular edema after a retinal vein occlusion. Remember, it is the constellation of findings that allows accurate OCT interpretation. Epiretinal membranes can cause retinal thickening, but not in this pattern. While you will certainly supplement OCT testing with clinical evaluation, learning pattern groupings remains critical to improving your diagnostic skills.
